HandedDown

Questions we ask

These are the questions HandedDown asks about each person in a family, by name. They are yours to use here or anywhere else. We are happy to consider others: include yours in your request to join!

Each question is about one concrete thing: a kitchen, a car, a first job, the way somebody laughed. A small question gets a story. A big one, like "what was your childhood like?", gets a summary.

Any of them can be started in a few minutes, out loud or typed. None of them ask about conflict, secrets or death. They are about who people were.

How to use them

  • Ask one at a time, and let the answer wander.
  • Record it if they don't mind. A phone on the table is enough.
  • Write down the names and places as you hear them.
  • Ask two relatives the same question. They will remember it differently, and both are worth keeping.
